The fashion industry plays with fatphobia and class aesthetics to make clothes look more attractive on thinner bodies. Even garments that are associated with poor class and fat people can eventually get the fashion stamp of approval. It’s amazing how subtle detail changes can elevate a look. However, this trend only works on an aspirational body. Those who are fat cannot afford to buy clothes that look good on skinny bodies.

There’s an implicit bias against fat bodies when it comes to fashion. While thin women in tight clothes are lauded for reclaiming their sexy sides, fat women are ridiculed for their overtly sexual appearance. The same goes for thin women in baggy athleisure – they’re praised for embracing low-key, sporty styles whereas fat women are criticized for being too sloppy and tacky.
